DON'T Follow the Rainbow

This is an exercise I created just now. I told Amber to give me a word and I would start a story with that as an idea. Her word was "rainbow" and I decided to put a bit of a horror twist on it. It has nothing to do with the fact I've been watching ghost stories on T.V. and reruns of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' on the Chiller channel. Well, here it goes.

It was one of those days that even the air felt alive. The warm summer breeze blew through Sophie's curly bangs, making her forehead tickle. She was young and happy and most of all, she was on summer break from college. It had been a dream of hers to go to Ireland. She was Irish by blood but that's were the similarities ended. Born in Maine, she grew up in the little town of York. But this was her last opportunity to live her dream. To visit her mother's family in Kerry before she started her internship in New York. The pictures she grew up seeing as a child showed rolling green hills and cliffs dropping straight into the ocean. There were two great things about this trip so far; her grandparent's property was exactly like the pictures, and she had brought her fiancĂ©e to introduce to her Gramma Brennan. Nothing could be more perfect than this moment.

Even in this "could not be more perfect moment" the most perfect thing happened. A rainbow off in the distance that seemed close enough to try and follow. Sophie turned to James, her fiancĂ©e with the quirky, mischievous smile that he loved so much. Without a word the race was on. Sophie was naturally given a head start but soon James was right beside her and soon there were at the base of the rainbow.

Neither of them actually thought they would reach the rainbow's base. It was, at least they thought it was, a myth. Follow the rainbow? Find a pot of gold? This had to be a trick. Sophie's and Jame's eyes met with matching gazes of excitement. The type of excitement you see on a child's face when they see that Santa ate the cookies and drank the milk. This could be a dream but even if it was, why not follow the rainbow?

To be continued...
